2018 Packers Free Agent Watch: Tight Ends

Ted Thompson could have easily pulled a Jim Calhoun about the tight end position last year. “What do you want me to say, I fucked up.” Who knew Martellus Bennett would be such a problem child (I mean that with no sarcasm). Who knew that Lance Kendricks was not the second coming of Jared Cook where his numbers were actually reflective of his talent. And Green Bay did not want to re-sign Cook to a long-term deal while he had a successful season with the Oakland Raiders. All in all, this position was a complete mess yet again. Green Bay will try to rectify it through the draft and potentially free agency.
1. Trey Burton (26) – If there’s one player to keep an eye on in the Super Bowl, it’s Trey Burton. The dude has an unreal athleticism and only recently switched to being a tight end/wide receiver whilst in college. He showed some flashes of what he can do as a number one tight end with an elite quarterback when Zach Ertz went down in the middle of the year. Burton is ready to be a starter in this league, and he may have star potential.
2. Austin Seferian-Jenkins (25) – New York Jets took a flyer on ASJ last season as the former second-round draft pick battled with alcohol issues prior to him playing with the Jets. He cleaned up his act and got sober leading to a stellar season as one of the Jets top threats in their passing game. He’s young at age 25, and a big body where he can be very physical between the tackles. My guess is the Jets will not let him go though given he became a cornerstone of their offense but it is the Jets we’re talking about here.
3. Tyler Eifert (27) – I assumed people expected Jimmy Graham to be here, and I can’t really get behind it. He would be a splash, but Graham disappeared way too often with Seattle last season. At times, he became a touchdown or bust guy. I don’t want to pay a premium for that kind of player. Therefore, it’s Eifert. He had all sorts of injury issues, but one of the better tight ends in the game when healthy. Green Bay could likely get a flyer on him for a one or two year deal yet there’s a ton of implied risk. They would need to have a talented tight end from the draft to supplement a guy like him.
