Allison & Lewis’ Return is a Good Thing For Packers Offense
While Green Bay Packers made a bevy of free agent signings on Tuesday, they brought back some talent from the 2018 roster specifically on offense. They tendered restricted free agent Geronimo Allison and brought back Marcedes Lewis. Green Bay did not get enough of either player last season with Allison being hurt for a majority of the year, and the Packers only using Lewis in the run blocking game yet he did not see the field that often. These two parts could have a different look and feel in 2019 versus what they did in 2018.
At the start of the 2018 season, Aaron Rodgers could not say enough nice things about Allison aka G-Mo. Rodgers developed a connection with him during training camp and showed in the early stages of the season. Rodgers found Allison for a great grab against Chicago in Week 1 of the season. Before getting hurt in the Buffalo game, Allison had eleven targets and 80 yards on six catches. Rodgers obviously thought there was a connection there. It would have been silly to ignore what he did in a small sample size when the restricted free agent tender is not that much money. Green Bay has a ton of wide receivers, yet, still, it would not be a bad idea to add a veteran slot receiver. They’re set on the outside with Davante Adams and Allison, but an older slot receiver would be an upgrade.
It surprises me somewhat that Lewis is back with the team. Remember, he ended up doing a Yahoo! Sports show with Martellus Bennett where he was hyper-critical of Mike McCarthy and the Packers locker room. At the time, I wrote how dumb he was considering a new coach could be better with tight ends. As a franchise, Green Bay can be sensitive if you touch the right button. But the Packers obviously pushed that aside to bring back Lewis. He loved playing for new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in Jacksonville and his ability to run block has to be alluring for Matt LaFleur’s new zone rushing attack.
Not sure if either of the signings affect what Green Bay does in the draft. I think they would be foolish to add another receiver unless they think one of the four guys (Jake Kumerow included) is a bust. As for tight end, Robert Tonyan is also returning with Lewis and Jimmy Graham. It’s an interesting dynamic given how good T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant could be for this team. It is not a sure thing that Graham is returning although it seems inevitable. Green Bay has to pick up his bonus by tomorrow.
Welcome back G-mo and Marcedes.
Charlie.
