Big Baller Brand Screams Bust For Ball Family

I told myself that I wouldn’t talk about LaVar Ball too much. I meant that. He hasn’t been featured on the site very often since I made that declaration. But he released Lonzo Ball’s first shoe this afternoon to the sweet tune of $495. Yes, it’s nearly $500 for a shoe, and the website states that you cannot return the shoe plus the shoe will not be to you until November. LaVar is trying to bankrupt his family. It’s impressive to watch how much of a dumpster fire this is going to be.
Not to brag, but I read a book whilst on vacation about Phil Knight building Nike. He did through track and field, and the shoe industry was different, yet my biggest takeaway is how hard it is to break into this industry. It’s harder than it was back in the day. There have been many shoe brands throughout the years who have fizzled out throughout the years. Shouts to Dada, Starbury’s and many others.
The problem here isn’t exactly Ball launching his own brand, rather, the price point he’s coming in on. The ask for 495 dollars from the customer is ridiculous for basketball shoes. My guess is the reason why LaVar and his marketing people set the price at that point is to offset the manufacturing costs. Further, Big Baller Brand does not have a retailer.
We shall see how this works. I never want to see a man fail, but this screams like a terrible idea for all involved parties.
Charlie.
