BrewCap: A Grand Giant Sweep

Milwaukee Brewers are red hot. They’ve been rolling for awhile winning the last six series from their opponents. The last time Milwaukee didn’t win a series was in mid-August against St. Louis. They’re won 13 of their last 19 games and sport a record that’s a season-high 20 games over .500. Milwaukee is playing its best baseball of the season. They’re two games back of the Chicago Cubs after a pivotal sweep over the San Francisco Giants that included Jonathan Schoop hitting a grand slam that proved to be the difference in a 6-3 victory.
Player of the Game: Jonathan Schoop – What a day for him. As people noted, he had his Brewers moment with the grand slam in the sixth inning after Madison Bumgarner hit Ryan Braun intentionally. It should be a lesson to all teams especially NL West ones that if you hit a Brewer intentionally, they’re going to put it in the seats. Schoop is seeing some things to hit at the plate. He drives in fifth run later in the game on a groundout that helped everyone advance and a much-needed insurance run.
Silver Star: Corey Knebel – Well, look who’s back? Relievers are funny, man. One day, they are complete gas cans, the next day, they’re back to being All-Stars. Knebel looks great out there, and continues to be a beast out of the bullpen since returning from his short stint in Colorado Springs. The fastball has some zip on it, and the curve is working again. The curve is so important to Knebel’s success. He shouldn’t get the closer role back from Jeffress but being used a situational one isn’t a bad thing.
Honorable Mention: Zach Davies – He didn’t pitch great, but still, I am encouraged by what I saw from Davies. He needs to string together some good outings. Davies isn’t back by any means, but he is showing that he has the ability to be part of the rotation. After much instability, the Brewers have a rotation these days with Davies, Gio, Chacin, Miley and Anderson. How that looks in the playoffs is beyond me.

Here we go again. Milwaukee and Chicago on Monday night at Wrigley Field. Brewers-Cubs. Chicago is playing its 20-23rd straight game this week against the Brewers. They’re looking to go up in the division with a sweep. Brewers send Made Miley to the hill while the Cubs send Jon Lester to the hill. Lester has been up and down in September, and he struggles at home. Curtis Granderson profiles the best against him with three homers.
