BrewCap: Arcia Finds First Hit at Right Time
Orlando Arcia has been struggling to start the 2019 season. Heading into last night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Arcia had yet to register a hit. That changed on Tuesday night. Arcia turned on a pitch and sent to right field heading over the wall past Yasiel Puig. It was a clutch homer with two runners on in a tied game. Brewers were able to hold on after the home run to a 4-3 victory as the Crew gains their fourth straight victory and their second series won this yea. Another solid win for Milwaukee to start the season, and they’re 5-1 to begin the year, only Philadelphia and Seattle hold better records.
Player of the Game: Orlando Arcia – Brewers do not win this game without the big fly by Orlando. Milwaukee did not have a ton of offense firepower on Tuesday nigh. This doesn’t mean that the Brewers shortstop is out of a slump either. He had one hit out of the many he has missed this season. It is time for Arcia to string together a few hits and get rolling a bit. The expectations for him to be a vital offense contributor isn’t truly the case, but you want to see him not be an automatic out either.
Honorable Mention: Josh Hader – It is probably run of the mill by now, but Hader stepped in for a back-to-back appearance for the first time all year. Moreover, this is only the sixth time in his career that he pitched in back-to-back games. After walking the first batter, Hader settled in to get the next three guys out with ease resulting in his fourth save of the season. He looked sharp in his back-to-back outing. It appears he is the closer until Jeremy Jeffress returns to the team.
Thing I Liked: Travis Shaw is a walk machine – It is early in the season, so, stats are somewhat flawed at this point, but Travis Shaw currently has a .500 OBP this season. He took three walks yesterday and ended up on base four times yesterday. Shaw has been always good at drawing walks, but he seems to be more patient at the plate waiting for his right pitch to strike versus chasing something reckless.
Thing I Didn’t Like: Can a Brewers starter get through six innings? – Milwaukee Brewers have not had a starter get past sixth innings since September 19th of last year. That pitcher was Gio Gonzalez. This is now a 34 game streak. Has Milwaukee been good during this stretch of time? Yes. Is it concerning? A little. I think you need to not put so much on the bullpen night in and night out.
Last three Brewers pitchers to work six innings in a regular season game:
Gio Gonzalez, 9/19/18
Wade Miley, 9/4/18
Jhoulys Chacin, 8/31/18That's a span of 34 games where pitchers have gone six innings just three times.

Next up: Milwaukee goes for the sweep this afternoon against Cincinnati this afternoon. Brewers swept the Reds last year in late April in Cincinnati and will hope to do the same today. Freddy Peralta takes the ball for Milwaukee. He struggled in his first start of the year and at this ballpark last year. Hopefully, he figured out his first inning issues. Reds send Luis Castillo to the hill. He dazzled in his first start and has been very good at home for his young Reds career.
