BrewCap: Betts Big Knock Ends Brewers Win Streak

Milwaukee Brewers had a chance to sweep Boston Red Sox. That’s a fun sentence to write. This game played like a classic with both pitchers – Eduardo Rodriguez and Jimmy Nelson going at it to a 1-1 duel. That was a far contrast to what we saw the last two games at Miller Park. Sadly for Brewers, Neftali Feliz continued his struggles allowing a three-run blast by Mookie Betts in the ninth inning resulting in a Boston victory.
Player of the Game (Brewers) – Jimmy nelson: Nice afternoon for Jimmy. Even though he blocks me on Twitter, I can give him some credit for his afternoon outing. Nelson went six and two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts with only four hits plus no earned runs. The walks weren’t great, but this is one of Nelson’s best pitching performances of the year. Hopefully, he can build off that next week in San Diego.
(Not) Player of the Game (Brewers): Neftali Feliz – It’s frustrating to remember that Greg Holland got a look from Brewers, and they went another direction going with the former Pirates and Rangers pitcher. He’s not good right now. Feliz is walking batters at way too high of a rate and surrendered five home runs in 16 innings of work. That’s just not getting it done.
Player of the Game (Red Sox) – Mookie Betts: Sure we could give it to Rodriguez, but Betts deserves for this one plus the series. He absolutely tore the cover off the baseball this week at Miller Park. I thought him or Andrew Benintendi would tear Brewers pitching up. Betts had another monster of a game with that home run, two hits and two runs scored.
Positive: It’s still a series win – Milwaukee should be happy with the result of this series even if things ended sour this afternoon. Two out of three against Boston is no easy task. If you can go 4-2 this week before heading out West for a quick four-gamer against a weak team, that’s very encouraging stuff.
Negative: Closer change is needed – It seems like Feliz might have closed his last game for Brewers. I don’t know how long of a lesh Craig Cousnell will give him, but it’s never an easy inning for this guy. Corey Knebel has been a beast thus far and closed games before so I could see him making his way to closer role. He’s their best bullpen pitcher right now and should get rewarded for how he’s performing.
Next up: Big drama around tonight’s game with Matt Harvey taking the ball against Matt Garza. Harvey was suspended for three games then provided a heartfelt apology to the team. Many people will buy into the narrative that he goes out and throws a gem yet I’m unsure. Harvey gave up 7 home runs over 35 innings work which could spell bad news against the Eric Thames, Travis Shaw’s of the world. I actually think the more interesting story is if Garza can keep this up for another game. Related, Jay Bruce returns to Miller Park to reek havoc.
