BrewCap: Braun Heats Up & Beats the Mets
Milwaukee Brewers need a bit of a spark after two awful pitching games on Wednesday and Thursday. Baseball is a great sport sometimes because you can bounce back instantly the next day. Brewers did just that against New York. They’ve done really well against the Mets in the last few years, and that trend continued on Friday night. Milwaukee won 3-1 in a well-pitched game with a hot Ryan Braun. He delivered the difference maker on Friday.
Player of the Game: Ryan Braun – We are seeing some hotness from Braunie in the past couple games, and that is absolutely great. He is 5-for-8 with two home runs and four RBis. That is a pretty good two game stretch and saw his average bump to .226. Even though Braun’s average might not be where Brewers fans and myself want it to be right now, he is still hitting home runs. Braun is at seven for the season and is second on the team. The launch angle work that he did over the offseason is paying off for him.
Honorable Mention: Brandon Woodruff – Would I like Woodruff to pitch longer in the game? Sure. But am I okay with how he’s pitching in the last few games? Absolutely. This guy has been nails of late. Woodruff allowed less than three runs in three of his last four starts. Part of the issue with him this season has been the big inning. The ERA is not indicative of how he’s pitching this season. For the struggles of Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta, Woodruff is a bright spot for the most part.
Thing I liked: Brewers pitching bounces back – Besides Woodruff, the Brewers pitching staff did a great job with the Mets’ strong bats. New York is slumping a little bit at the plate, but good on Milwaukee’s staff for not letting them get heated up again. Alex Claudio, Junior Guerra and Josh Hader did the damn thing out of the bullpen. The combination of Hader and Guerra is deadly in the late innings, and that could be a major thing for Milwaukee in the coming months.
Thing I didn’t like: You have to capitalize with runners on – Brewers had some issues with guys on the basepaths last night. Brewers were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and the only run that scored was Yasmani Grandal scoring on Braun’s homer. Milwaukee also hit into three double plays. That’s not a good look for the Crew.
Highlight of the Night: Braun mashes a monster homer.

Next up: Brewers will try to get their second straight victory as Gio Gonzalez gets his Miller Park debut for 2019. Gonzalez did well against the Mets earlier this week, but as we mentioned with Steven Matz, it is tough to face a team in back-to-back games. Zach Wheeler takes the ball for New York. He did not do well at Miller Park last year and is off to a rough start to begin the 2019 year. Christian Yelich may return for the Brewers which would be a massive lift.
