BrewCap: Brewers’ Bad Luck Continues in Pittsburgh

In sports, we overuse the phrase ‘House of Horrors.’ It’s a fun phrase to say and if someone or some team has mild struggles with something or somewhere, that could be classified with the house of horrors mentality. No place is more like that for the Brewers than PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Milwaukee is completely lost against Pittsburgh. They’ve only won at this ballpark four times in the last 18 or 19 tries. It’s unbelievable. The game yesterday capsulated what we’ve seen here with the Brewers blowing a lead in the ninth and 10th inning to lose the game. It was incredible to see Milwaukee lose this game yesterday and now fall to 2.5 games back of Chicago.
Player of the Game: Brett Phillips – Good for the young centerfielder who got called up when Jonathan Villar went down with a thumb injury, and he made an immediate impact. Phillips drove in four of the six Brewers runs on Sunday including a huge three-run triple in the eighth inning. Phillips’ name has been brought up in trade talks this July, and this type of game will certainly help his stock.
Silver Star: Josh Hader – Even though the Brewers lost, we still saw Josh Hader for nearly two innings. Hader pitched great with four strikeouts through 1.2 innings of work. Hader pitched masterfully and did not look like he had any rust on his body. If you want one bright spot through all of this darkness, Hader really did get some time off which was probably needed and he’ll be ready for the second half of the season.
Honorable Mention: David Freese – You know it’s funny, I almost felt like in the car that there was no way the Brewers could survive both Jody Mercer and David Freese. Both have killed the Brewers throughout the years, and when Mercer grounded into a double play, I thought maybe this time would be different. It was not as Freese tripled home the tying run.
Next up: Milwaukee will get four days to think about a six-game losing streak. They’ll be at home to play Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers are a much better team than they were earlier this season. Remember, they had some crazy things go their way at Miller Park last year. It should be a fun series though.
