BrewCap: Brewers Get a Gritty Victory

We overuse the term ‘grit’ all the time. Sometimes, it’s for fun. Other times, we’re using it to make fun of something. Gritty is the way you define what the Milwaukee Brewers did on Monday night. They battled back from being down 5-1 in the fifth to win the game in extra innings, 6-5. Milwaukee bounces back from losing two straight in Cincinnati and gained a half game on the Chicago Cubs. This is the type of victory that keeps you on top of the National League Central table.
Player of the Game: Brad Miller – Here we go again. Milwaukee brings in a guy, and he’s an immediate contributor. I absolutely love it. Miller has been great during his time with the Brewers. He’s hitting .385 and becoming a real force at the top of the lineup. Miller went 3-for-5 and took a four pitch walk to win the game in the 10th inning. Miller had three hits with two runs scored and a clutch RBI in the fifth.
Silver Star: Keon Broxton – The hot week for Keon continues with a great catch at the wall that kept this game at 5-4 in the seventh inning. I was sitting in left field and could see it all the way. Broxton had it perfectly timed and grabbed it from being a homer for Joe Mauer. Broxton should be on this roster when Lorenzo Cain comes back. He’s a valued asset on defense and has speed for days. I get that he strikes out too much and maybe that holds him back as a bench player. We’ll see.
Honorable Mention: Manny Pina – It’s been awhile since we’ve talked about Manny Pina on the BrewCap, but here we are. Pina had himself an awesome game with a home run right after Robbie Grossman’s grand slam. He added another hit and a run scored in this game. Pina isn’t having the season he did in 2017, but he’s still been a productive enough catcher at the plate.
Next up: Brewers will be playing a rare Tuesday day game against Minnesota this afternoon. Kinda dig it. Realize that it’s due to people being able to attend the game then fireworks downtown tonight. Junior Guerra goes for Milwaukee while Jake Odorizzi goes for Minnesota. Guerra has been a gritty pitcher all year long and continues to impress on the mound. Odorizzi dazzled versus Chicago last week and dominated the Crew earlier this season. He does have a tendency to give up the long ball to lefties.
