BrewCap: Brewers Puke All Over Their Ninth Inning Shoes

Pathetic. There are not many other words to describe what we saw on Thursday afternoon with the Milwaukee Brewers. They had a 4-1 lead early in the game, and San Diego did add a run before the ninth inning. Two-run lead seemed safe until things turned into a fucking nightmare. Corey Knebel walked the first three batters he faced. They were the 7-8-9 hitters of the worst hitting team in the league. Joakim Soria got a quick out before giving up a grand slam to Hunter Renfroe. To throw salt in the wound, Jacob Barnes gave up a dinger to Franmil Reyes. Brewers lost 8-4 in an utter collapse in the night that makes you wonder is this going to happen again?
Player of the Game: Hunter Renfroe – Have a series, Hunter Renfroe. The guy shows what he could do at a park that’s a bit smaller. Renfroe slugged three homers in this series including the biggest one, the grand slam in the ninth inning. He’s a power hitter to fear in years to come. My one takeaway from this series is the Padres have some fun, young pieces. They’re like the Brewers of 2016 where you can see the glimmers of talent, but it’s not all the way there yet.
Silver Star: Padres Bullpen – Give it up to the Pads’ pen today, they struck out eight batters in four innings and kept the Brewers mostly off the basepaths. They allowed three hits and only really saw trouble in the sixth inning. Good performance by a solid San Diego bullpen. Like I said, they are some pieces here to be a successful baseball team.
Honorable Mention: Jonathan Schoop – If you want a bright spot from this game, it’s Jonathan Schoop. He had his first good game as a Brewer with a two-run double to drive in the second and third runs of the game for Milwaukee then came around to score on a great hustle play. Hopefully, this is the start of Schoop looking more comfortable at the plate.
Next up: Brewers head to Atlanta for a pivotal three-game series with the Braves. Freddy Peralta gets the start for Milwaukee. He dazzled against Atlanta last time around and will get another shot on Friday. Braves will send Kevin Gausman to the hill. Gausman was a Brewers trade target until Atlanta scooped him up. He has troubles with the long ball versus lefties, so, hello Travis Shaw and Mike Moustakas.
Charlie.
