BrewCap: Burnes Struggles Again as Brewers Can’t Sweep
Anyone with half a brain about the Milwaukee Brewers advised the world to not overreact to Corbin Burnes. He is a young pitcher, and he will figure out at some point. But that figuring out process may have to wait a few weeks. Burnes did not pitch well again yesterday afternoon giving up five runs in the first three innings and could not keep the Brewers winning streak alive as they fall 6-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals. It appears that we have seen the last of Burnes for a few weeks. er
Player of the Game: Michael Wacha – This guy continues to dominate against the Milwaukee Brewers. Even though his team lost to the Crew the last time Wacha faced Milwaukee, he still pitched really well. He made one mistake to Aaron Wilkerson of all people, but other than that, a dazzling performance from the right-hander. He went six innings, two runs allowed, seven strikeouts and two walks. He definitely showed why he is the current ace of this pitching staff. He shut the door on a losing streak.
Honorable Mention: Aaron Wilkerson – The last two years, the Brewers brought up Aaron Wilkerson to help out the staff. In 2017, he showed some promise. In 2018, he did not pitch well to call for a long-term visit. Wilkerson is definitely here with something to prove. He went four innings, allowed one run and hit a two-run homer for the team. Curious to see whether he takes Burnes’ spot n the rotation next week.
Thing I liked: Jeremy Jeffress’ return – We saw the first of Jeremy Jeffress in the year 2019. JJ pitched two-thirds of an inning getting Milwaukee out of a jam after Wilkerson gave up a run to Matt Wieters. Good to see him deal with a high-leverage situation out of the box and handle it with ease. Curious to see how much we see of him this weekend.
Thing I didn’t like: No offense on Wednesday afternoon – Brewers did not have Lorenzo Cain in the lineup, and who knows if the shifting of a lineup hurt the team. They did not do much with Wacha on the mound. The Crew had two double play balls, and they missed opportunities to score when runners in scoring position. It was a tough day for the offense.
Next up: Brewers stay home to play the Los Angeles Dodgers. This will be their fourth matchup of the year, and Los Angeles’ first since Game 7 of last season. Julio Urias goes for Los Angeles while the Crew sends Zach Davies to the hill. Urias struggled versus Milwaukee last week while Davies dominated Dodgers’ bats.
