BrewCap: Cubs Bats Bash Brewers In Blowout
This kind of felt inevitable, didn’t it? Brewers’ brass runs their mouth about Chicago Cubs, and they follow it up by getting their asses kicked. It didn’t motivate Cubs, but it’s just something that tends to happen on occasion. Jake Arrieta struggled all May, but Brewers were his recipe for getting right with a shutdown performance with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field. Cubs bats also woke up with four home runs and 13 runs as they dominated Milwaukee in a game that looked a little closer thanks to a big ninth inning.
Player of the Game (Brewers): Jonathan Villar – Maybe this is the start of something for Villar. He had a three-hit game with a stolen base as well as a double and a run scored. A part of me wondered today if he’s the next Aramis Ramirez where he starts slow then gets going in the summer. Brewers would love to have Villar’s bat in full force as they’re rolling without him doing big things.
(Not) Player of the Game (Brewers): Chase Anderson – It appears that Chase Anderson success train has come to an official close. Anderson gave up six runs while walking three and giving up seven hits with three homers attached to them. Anderson appears to be the next on the chopping block for pitchers, and you have to wonder when it will be time for Brandon Woodruff or Josh Hader. My guess is Woodruff would get the first go at it this summer if Brewers need some help at starter.
Player of the Game (Cubs): Kris Bryant – What a game for Bryant who has been hot and cold to start the year. Bryant found his stroke against Crew sending out two solo home runs as well as another hit and four runs scored. He had one of his best games of the season. Bryant will look to continue that hot streak next week as Chicago would love if he gets warm.
Positive: Ryan Braun is back – It’s good to have Ryan Braun back from injury. The Brewers left fielder said the injuries that ailed him at the beginning of the month are all healed up. Braun didn’t do much in his first game back going 0-for-5 with an RBI groundout. But the more important thing is he’s back and hopefully, we see some big things from him in June.
Negative: Eric Thames legs – It’s a bummer to see Thames go out early from the game with leg cramps. This appears to be an issue for him as Craig Counsell mentioned it before he missed nearly a week with strep throat. It could be effect from the strep, or the night out, who knows. I’m sure Brewers like getting the extra day off with Thames on Monday.
Next up: Brewers finish off their two-game series with Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays are scuffling again with losing five of their last seven including two of three versus Baltimore over the weekend. Joe Biagini heads to hill for Jays who scuffled in his second start of the year versus Atlanta. Milwaukee goes with Jimmy Nelson whose on a bit of a heater with 13.2 innings, three runs allowed and 16 strikeouts in his last two starts.
