Baseball is a weird sport. You know that. I know that. Nothing makes sense. Sometimes, you have a team like the Pittsburgh Pirates who sweep the Brewers only to get no-hit the next time they’re playing. Sometimes, you see things that do not usually happen at a baseball game. Case in point, Ben Gamel throwing out a runner at home in a force situation. Gamel threw out Freddy Galvis at the plate to keep Milwaukee up 3-2. If not for Gamel, the Reds would have tied up the game at three. Who knows where it would have gone from there. But it didn’t, and Milwaukee gets their second straight win, 3-2.

Player of the Game: Ben Gamel – We already mentioned Benny’s hose of an arm, but what about the bat too. Brewers went with a lefty-heavy lineup, therefore Gamel batted up in the order. He delivered for Craig Counsell with a game-tying double. He would score on an Orlando Arcia single to make it 4-2. Gamel is back in the groove as a fourth outfielder. He is 5-for-12 in the last seven days showcasing Gamel’s worth as a fourth outfielder.

Honorable Mention: Brandon Woodruff – Great game from Woody on the mound. He had the one bad inning in the fourth, but other than that, he did well for six innings only allowing four hits and striking out eight batters. Woodruff did not allow a hit until that troublesome fourth inning. My only knock with him is he relaxes a bit after getting a lead and that can lead to more baserunners and sometimes, runs.

One thing to talk about: Eric Sogard’s struggles continue – Milwaukee Brewers love Eric Sogard. Part of me thinks the reason is Sogard reminds Craig Counsell of himself. Sogard is mired in a 5-for-41 slump. That’s not good. Sogard cannot keep holding a spot in the order if that’s the case. There are too many other good infielders instead such as Luis Urias, Keston Hiura, Jedd Gyroko who can fill the void. We’ll see the Brewers give Sogard the DFA.

Next up: Milwaukee tries to win the series over Cincinnati on Wednesday with their third straight win. They would completely wash the Pittsburgh series with a win tonight. Brewers will deal again with Sonny Gray who struggled the last time he was at Miller Park this season. Adrian Houser looks to bounce back after a rough start in Pittsburgh. He is better at home than he is on the road for his career. Houser did not pitch well versus Cincinnati last season.
