BrewCap: Lefty Power Lineup Pays Off
Milwaukee Brewers have a righty-killer lineup, and it is dangerous. Brewers had six left-handers in a row with the righties, Lorenzo Cain and Orlando Arcia on the top and bottom. It paid off in a big way. Christian Yelich, Travis Shaw and Mike Moustakas all hit home runs to help carry the Brewers past the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday with a 4-2 victory. Milwaukee’s pitching staff also did a great job in this one holding St. Louis’ potent offense down.
Player of the Game: Mike Moustakas – After a somewhat up and down half year with Milwaukee last year, the new second basemen is off to a fast start in 2019. This is his second home run in three games. Moustakas had Yasmani Grandal on when he lashed a home run to push the lead to three. Moose added another hit as well. He is hitting a sparkling .444 for the year.
Honorable Mention: Alex Wilson – You don’t want to overreact to one appearance, but Wilson had a great 1.1 innings. He faced four Cardinals and dominated them in a major way. He had two strikeouts including one on Paul Goldschmidt. This could be another savvy pick up from David Stearns. We’ll see, but I am very impressed with what we saw on Saturday night from him. He mowed them down.
One Thing I Liked: Brandon Woodruff had a strong outing – Even though he only pitched five innings, Brandon Woodruff did a solid job. He pitched five innings, gave up six hits and struck out five. Woodruff did give up two runs, but the Brewers will take that kind of outing most games he pitches on the mound. He needs to work a little more efficiently seeing as he had 100 pitches in five innings.
One Thing I Didn’t Like: Brewers didn’t capitalize on offense – This could have been a bloodbath against the Cardinals. Brewers had four chances to add runs in this game and could not. Eric Thames struck out with the bases loaded as well as another opportunity. Arcia also had a chance with the bases loaded, and he lined out.
Next up: Brewers get rolling here in a little bit. Corbin Burnes’ first start of his young career. We’ll see how he handles the Cardinals. It is not going to be an easy debut. Hopefully, Burnes can keep his head and deliver a good outing for the Brewers. Michael Wacha goes for the Cardinals, and he has been dominant against Milwaukee for the last several years.
