BrewCap: Pina & Aguilar Propel Brewers Blowout

Milwaukee Brewers have a way of shutting out the Cincinnati Reds. Brewers won 7-0 on Wednesday night. It’s their fifth shutout against the Reds this season. For Cincinnati, it’s the first time since 1960 that one individual team shut them out five times in a season. For the Brewers, it’s the first time since 1971. Hard not to love everything you saw from Milwaukee last night. Gio Gonzalez pitched great, and the Brewers received two key bombs from Jesus Aguilar and Manny Pina. Brewers move back to 3 games up in the Wild Card and gain a game on the Chicago Cubs in the division race sitting at 2.5 games.
Player of the Game: Manny Pina – I know that Zeus had four of the seven RBIs, but I have to give Pina some love. The Brewers are up four runs in the sixth inning. Everything is truly fine in the game. Reds only had two hits. Pina is battling with Matt Harvey after Cincy intentionally walked Mike Moustakas. Pina fouled off seven two-out pitches before connecting for a huge three-run homer to seal the game for Milwaukee. Pina had some clutch hits last season, and let’s hope the same is coming around the corner.

Silver Star: Jesus Aguilar – If the Brewers were to have a torrid streak in the next nine games, Jesus Aguilar would need to be a factor. The dude had his first big game in awhile with a three-run blast and an RBI single. Aguilar saw the ball well on Wednesday night. That’s an encouraging sign for the Brewers. We’ve seen flashes from Zeus in the second half, but nothing like his run in June and July. Let’s hope he finds that stroke again.
Honorable Mention: Gio Gonzalez – In his third start with the Brewers, Gio looked strong again only allowing two hits over six innings. He pitched very well for the Brewers on Wednesday night. That’s the type of performance you want to see from him. To me, he’s locked into a starter’s role if the Brewers have a division series matchup. I tend to believe he might be the fourth option assuming Craig Counsell does not want to go lefty/lefty with Wade Miley likely being the second guy up in the rotation.
Next up: Milwaukee goes to Pittsburgh which is a house of horrors. Everyone talks about how much Milwaukee struggles against PIttsburgh that you almost hope it motivates the team. Brewers will send Jhoulys Chacin to the mound to face off against Ivan Nova again. Brewers will look to get some runs for Chacin as they haven’t in the last two starts.
