BrewCap Weekend: Exorcising The PNC Park Demons
PNC Park is not one of the Brewers’ favorite locations. As mentioned on Friday’s recap, Brewers were on the wrong side of a five-game sweep by Pittsburgh at this very ballpark. The luck for Milwaukee changed this weekend. They were able to steal a couple of victories from the jaws of defeat and win three of four taking the series from Pittsburgh. With the Cubs’ recent struggles, Milwaukee took the reigns of first place and are now one and a half games up over Chicago. Brewers have won six of their last eight games.
Sunday: Brewers 4 Pirates 2
After the craziness of Saturday, this felt predictable. A game where the offense would be at a premium and the bats would not be as hot as they were on Saturday night. Zach Davies pitched another gem for the Crew going eight-plus innings giving up eight hits, two runs, and three strikeouts. Even though Davies did not have his dominant stuff, he kept Pittsburgh at bay for the most part. Eric Thames deserves some credit too for Sunday’s victory. He had an excellent ball game with a two-run home run and scored on a run.
Saturday: Brewers 12 Pirates 10 (13 innings)
Milwaukee Brewers are now required to play crazy Saturday games all year. As pointed by Adam McCalvy, this team played their wildest games of the year on Saturdays, and this week was no different. Brewers fans thought this would be a defeat after Josh Hader gave up a three-run homer to Starling Marte to put the Pirates up 10-8 headed to the ninth. Felipe Vasquez has been a dominant closer, but Keston Hiura squared up on the baseball hitting
Friday: Pirates 9 Brewers 4
The only real blemish of the weekend was Friday night. Jhoulys Chacin really struggled on Friday. He has not been right all year, and it is starting to feel like the Opening Day starter curse is rearing its ugly head yet again for Milwaukee. Chacin walked in three runs in a truly ugly start. Hiura did hit a three-run dinger in this one which was the lone bright spot of the game.
Next up: Brewers get another day off before heading home to play the Miami Marlins. While the Marlins are the worst team in the National League East, they can not be taken for granted. Marlins are 11-5 in their last 16 games, and in the last seven days, they’ve been top ten in runs produced along with pitching ERA. Brewers need to have their heads on straight and not overlook this team. Pablo Lopez goes for Miami. He’s struggled on the road this season and did not have a great start vs. Milwaukee last year. Chase Anderson goes for the Crew. Chase had two nice starts vs. the Fish last season.
