Brandon Woodruff could be an ace. People talk about Brandon Woodruff with this immense potential. It isn’t this notion that he is underperforming though. Rather, ‘can he do it?’ I feel many people do not think Woodruff has enough stuff to ben ace for a baseball team. Well, if Wednesday was any indication, he can become one. Woodruff went six-plus innings and striking out 10 batters only walking one and giving up one hit. Brewers take the series from the Pirates and go 3-3 on their first road trip.

Player of the Game: Brandon Woodruff – There is something great about watching an ace-like pitcher shove it against a team. Woodruff had his change-up working like no one’s business last night. On a night where Jacob deGrom, Charlie Morton, Mike Soroka all took the mound, Woodruff was the best pitcher by far. He dominated Pittsburgh and hopefully it is a sign of things to come.

Honorable Mention: Devin Williams – This could have gone to Keston Hiura or Ben Gamel for the offense but wanted to touch on the young reliever. Devin Williams might be the next great Brewer. I know that seems hyperbole, but I love this guy’s stuff. Monday went well for inning one, but inning two was a mess. I’m not trying to look into too much but it seems Milwaukee has a bullpen group for closing out a game – David Phelps and/or Williams then Josh Hader for the ninth.

One Thing to Talk About: Christian Yelich’s struggles continue – Maybe, he just needs Miller Park. Christian Yelich is not hitting the baseball right now. Bill Schroder made a good point about it being amplified in the first part of the season versus in the middle. Yelich will figure it out. There could also be some routine stuff that is different from COVID that could be throwing Yelich off. He will break out at some point and everyone is in big trouble.

Next up: Brewers head home for their home opener at Miller Park on Friday afternoon. Brewers will take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Brett Anderson will get the ball for the Crew. It will be Anderson’s first start in a Brewers uniform. Jack Flaherty goes for St. Louis. He was great in his first start of the year and dominated the Crew last year. This will be a tough one for Milwaukee.
