Brewers Add Depth With Spangenberg
Milwaukee Brewers make their first signing of the hot stove season by adding former San Diego Padres infielder Cory Spangenberg to the roster. He is a second baseman with a dash of third base and outfield. This does not seem like the addition to solve Milwaukee’s second base problem, but it’s likely a player more for depth of the roster.
Spangenberg is a still a young player. He is only 27 years old, therefore, he may not have hit his peak as a baseball player. There isn’t one thing he does really well on the baseball diamond hence why my assumption is he will be a bench player for Milwaukee. He hits for a decent average, doesn’t have a ton of power and plays a good second base. He had 18 errors in 2016, but most of those came from the third base position. This is a pure depth move for the Brewers plus Spangenberg has an option making it easier to find a spot for him after Spring Training. IF you recall, the Brewers tend to have a decent amount of these guys on their roster during the Stearns/Counsell era.
Spangenberg feels like similar to a Tyler Saladino, Eric Sogard, Nick Franklin signing versus something major. Some fans are concerns this is the guy at second base, and that is just not true. Brewers will make a move for someone at second base, but he’s not the answer. I do think Milwaukee likes the idea that he cam play multiple positions and could see his peak being a left-handed version of Hernan Perez. Again, this isn’t someone to overreact to either in the positive or the negative.
