Brewers Don’t Need Bryce Harper… BUT!

Okay, the biggest news of the Trade Deadline Tuesday is Bryce Harper could be on the move. The city is done with him, the team is .500 and in need of a wakeup call. It could be one of the biggest deadline moves to ever happen. Teams that could be in the running for the mega star are Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Houston. Sure, there could be a few others in the hunt including Milwaukee. They really don’t need Harper, but why not at least take a look at what might be the package to bring in one of the world’s best players for a playoff run.
Obviously, there would be guys like Keston Hiura and Corbin Burnes off the table. There has to be some limitations to this deal. Bryce Harper is a great player, but he’s a rental like any other rental in the big leagues. Brewers would probably need to move an outfielder in this situation. Eric Thames might be the guy for Washington who can play right away. And maybe Milwaukee sells very high on Corey Ray who has been red hot of late, even if Washington has Victor Robles waiting in the wings A pitcher needs to be involved probably as well to get this deal done. Which one? Freddy Peralta is probably too steep but will be asked about by Washington. Luis Ortiz feels more reasonable or Zach Brown.
Other than Cleveland, the teams that are mentioned probably have a legitimate shot at signing Harper in the offseason. That’s not the Brewers. Nothing would be a bigger kick in the dick than seeing Harper in a Brewers uniform only to make the switch to the Chicago Cubs. That would be very on-brand for everything considered. But teams like Philly, New York and Houston all think they’re going to be in the running this winter for one of the best left-handers in baseball. I can’t see Milwaukee making this kind of move with all of the outfielder talent they currently have right now.
This is the fun thing about the deadline. Anything can happen. And there are many non-deals where move doesn’t get made. Hope David Stearns has a good day as I’m sure the phone lines will be busy.
Charlie.
