Brewers Fans Need to Relax About Second Base

Here we go again. I swear Milwaukee Brewers are top tier in Chicken Little franchises. I guess it makes sense since most of these people are also Bucks fans. It’s a complex this city carries around with them. This afternoon was a double whammy for Brewers fans. First, the Arizona Diamondbacks who are trailing Milwaukee for the first Wild Card spot, traded for Eduardo Escobar for three lottery tickets to Minnesota, and next, Philadelphia Phillies made a deal for Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets. Phillies are flip-flopping with the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the National League East. It’s perfectly fine that the Brewers didn’t get either of these guys.
Does Escobar or Cabrera help the Brewers? Absolutely. There’s no question about it. But it’s not like they’re going to completely change the outlook of this season. The other part of both those players is they are rentals. Cabrera and Escobar are both signable players after the 2018 season, but it’s not like that’s a guarantee in any regards. Brewers are looking for controllable talent, so, they can have players where the team could make a push in 2019 or 2020. Also, there are other middle infielders out there like Brian Dozier, Starlin Castro and potentially Daniel Murphy if Washington would decided to sell off the roster.
Brewers could also be fixing things as I type words. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Milwaukee is in serious talks with Baltimore. It’s unknown what the package is for, but it could be Jonathan Schoop and Kevin Gausman. Both players are controllable past 2018 and have major potential to both of them. Schoop is a big-time power hitter especially after lefties and has been red hot of late. Gausman shows flashes of potential, but he hasn’t fully put it together. You also never know, Dylan Bundy or a smaller piece like Tim Beckham could be involved too.
It’ll be alright, Brewers fans.
Charlie.
