Brewers Start Homestand on Embarrassing Note
Blowouts are never fun when you’re on the other side of things. Milwaukee lost last night, 16-0. That’s a bad one. Considering, it was against the Miami Marlins too, it’s not great at all. I did mention on the podcast and the blog that Miami is playing way better of late, and Milwaukee might be catching them on the wrong time. Marlins have won 12 of their last 17 games. They’re hitting the ball pretty well and doing a decent job hitting. Brewers waved the white flag after the eleven-run inning. Brewers haven’t won three straight games since mid-May.
Player of the Game: Garrett Cooper – In a cruel, twist of fate, a former Brewers AAA guy playing first base had the best game of the night. He had four hits in five at-bats with a home run and scored four runs. Cooper is a left-handed bat that is hitting .289 for the year. He was once considered a quad-A player, but Cooper has been awesome this season in a very small sample. The Marlins first baseman is hitting .289 with five home runs and an OBP of .368. This adds a little salt in the wounds.
Honorable Mention: Starlin Castro – I can not believe that Starlin Castro is still a baseball player in 2019. I know that might be weird, but Castro being an everyday figure in my life seems so long ago. Castro has not been a Cubs infielder since 2015, which was four years ago at this point. He had a good night at the plate with a homer, two hits and three runs driven in.
The Thing I Didn’t Like: Will warm weather hurt Chase Anderson’s strong start? – Chase Anderson has been a good pitcher for the year. Before last night, he did not have a bad start honestly. Anderson blew up yesterday with four runs in four innings including three home runs surrendered. We remembered how much he struggled at Miller Park last year with the long ball. Part of me is concerned with the warm weather if that will hurt him. With Jimmy Nelson back and two guys likely back in 10 days or so, Anderson might be the odd man out.
Next Up: The one good thing about baseball is they can bounce back from a blowout the next day. Today is the debut of Jimmy Nelson. I have no idea what to expect from Jimmy after being benched with a shoulder injury since 2017. We’ll see what happens and if he has a pitch count. Marlins will send Sandy Alcantara to the mound. He has been a disaster on the road thus far this season, so, maybe the Brewers can flip the table here.
