Bucks Adding Trevon Duval is a Smart Lottery Ticket

When it comes to two-way contracts, it’s a lottery ticket. You have no idea what you’re going to get out of someone. Milwaukee Bucks decided to use their two-way contract on former Duke guard Trevon Duval. He went undrafted after being a McDonald’s All-American in 2017, and Duval would have probably been better off staying at Duke for another year. That said, he has all of the talent in world. He was a five-star prospect, and Milwaukee is hoping that he can rise up and be a factor for the Milwaukee Bucks.
In his one year at Duke, Duval averaged 10 points per game with five assists in about 29 minutes. Duval was a factor for the Blue Devils but never really the star of the team. He’s a slashing point guard without question. Good size at 6’3 and if you watch his high school tape, the dude can jump out of the gym. Yet there are issues with his three-point shot. Duval is only a 29 percent three-point shooter. You wonder with his ability to fly high mixed with the lack of shooting if he’s a better off-ball player. Still, he has the talent to potentially be a factor for the Bucks off the bench.
This is the type of move you want to see from Jon Horst and crew. They’re not taking some retread or someone whose been bouncing around, rather, they’re taking a shot on a former top tier prospect. Duval was the best point guard in the 2017 class for high school players. If he stayed at school for a year or two extra, he might be a first-round pick. He’s going to take some seasoning, but there’s a chance that this kid could contribute to the Bucks this season. I do not think that’s a ridiculous take.
For all the bluster of the Ersan signing, can we admit the Bucks are having a good summer? Like is that safe to say or will Bucks Twitter call me out for being an idiot? Sure, they might have overpaid Ersan, but they added Brook Lopez who gives them space, passed on the defenseless, absent-minded Jabari Parker and now add Duval. Not a bad summer for Horst.
