Milwaukee Bucks made quite possibly the biggest news dump of 2017. They’re getting quite good at it. Gery Woefel reports that Billy McKinney and Chris Gilmartin, two longtime Bucks scouting personnel, are leaving the team along with a few others due to pay cuts. Milwaukee’s front office remains in a state of flux, and panic has not set in yet although it’s fair to wonder what the hell is actually going on at this point?

From the outside looking in, it appears there was no contingency plan if John Hammond were to leave this team. They did not plan for it. That’s what this all says to me. You know the Mike Tyson saying ‘Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth.’ That’s what happened to Bucks front office. I don’t think Hammond leaving was all that surprising yet it appears Bucks were not ready for it in any sort of capacity. McKinney and Gilmartin showed the door are yet another example of this.

Couple things to chew on – McKinney had been with the organization for nine years whilst Gilmartin worked for Bucks since the days of Herb Kohl. Could leadership want to officially wash their hands of anything that had Kohl’s name on it? Maybe. I don’t think he was that bad of an owner, but everyone wants to show they have the biggest dick in the room. The other part is could either of these guys in fact wanted an elevated role and Jon Horst decided against it? It’s quite possible with the recent track record of developing talented players or finding them like Giannis Antetokounmpo. My last question is did McKinney or Gilmartin push for newest Bucks D.J. Wilson and Sterling Brown? All of these things should have answers.

To be fair to Bucks front office, teams in all sports make scouting changes after their respective draft is over. This isn’t a new practice. But you have to wonder where this is coming from after McKinney helped steady the ship when Hammond left for Orlando.

At some point, the Bucks front office needs to a win this summer because they’ve started out on a losing streak.
