BuckyCap: A Comedy of Errors Plagues Wisconsin
Wisconsin Badgers were still in the hunt of a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament. They had the perfect schedule to do it against with the four bottom teams in the Big Ten. All Wisconsin had to was win, and then a spot could have opened for two days off at the Big Ten Tournament. Alas, it has become harder to achieve that goal for Wisconsin. They fall to Indiana in double-overtime in an error-filled eye-gauging basketball game. It’s a rough loss for Wisconsin and a small step back for a team who looks like it could be limited by its errors come March.
Player of the Game: Romeo Langford – There is a reason why people think he can be a top 10 pick in next year’s NBA Draft. Even with Indiana being a bottom barrel Big Ten team, they have some talent. Langford is one of those guys. He has a very effecive dribble-drive to the basket and is one of the best finishers in college basketball. Even though he has no left-hand, Langford found a way to the lane. He finished with 22 points and seven rebounds including the game-winning bucket to beat Wisconsin in double-overtime.
Silver Star: Khalil Iverson – One of the better players on the court last night for Wsiconsin was Khalil Iverson. He has been playing well in the last month. Iverson did a great job defensively, and he contributed on offensive side of the ball as well. The Badgers forward had 15 points on seven-of-eleven shooting. He did have a big miss in double-overtime, but part of me felt the gas was on empty for him by the time those guys hit the double overtime.
Thing I liked: Second half battle back – Wisconsin looked dead in the second half. They were down 13 points in the second half, and that is the type of lead that usually means ‘goodnight Bucky.’ Instead, Badgers found a way to force overtime. Did the errors get out of hand in the extra periods? Absolutely. But you have to commend this Wisconsin team for forcing their way back into this ball game with a strong push to the finish line.
Thing I didn’t like: Free throws, free throws – How many times will Wisconsin be a bad free throw shooting team and not figure it out? Does Greg Gard need to hire a free throw specialist for these guys? I mean this is ridiculous. Badgers haven’t improved over the last couple years on this and it has at least cost them a few games. Think about this, Wisconsin left six points on the table in double overtime because they couldn’t make a free throw. Hard to trust in March.
Next up: Wisconsin heads back home to the Kohl Center for a matchup with Penn State. The Nittany Lions have been playing better ball of late winning three of their last five games after starting the Big Ten season off winless. This is a tough stretch for them though as they play Maryland tonight and a road trip to Wisconsin over the weekend.
