Clay Matthews isn’t afraid to mince word. He gets in front of the microphone at times and says how he feels about a certain situation. Matthews let his opinion be felt about the outside linebacker depth to the media yesterday. Basically, he doesn’t think highly of Vince Biegel, Reggie Gilbert or Kyler Fackrell. Let’s call a spade a spade here. Packers do have a solid rotation of outside linebackers, but they lack veterans past Matthews and Nick Perry. One thing the star Packer linebacker doesn’t understand here is it’s a long summer. Here’s his full quote via ProFootballTalk from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

You look at the depth at the outside linebacker position, and it’s not that great,” Matthews said, via Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “That’s not a slight to the guys who are behind Nick and myself, but you look around the league, a lot of times they’re rotating in pass rushers. You can look a couple years ago when we had Mike Neal and Julius [Peppers] here, Datone [Jones] as well. We had a pretty good rotation.

Green Bay could easily bring a veteran in this summer to appease Matthews. Not saying that’s what will happen, but it’s something on the table. I feel like Matthews isn’t doing himself favors with new General Manager Brian Gutekunst speaking out on issues like this in May. He’s basically trying to lay the ground work of excuses, and that the Packers need more guys than just him and Nick Perry.

If I’m Biegel, Gilbert or Fackrell, I have this quote on my locker for the remainder of summer. This should be motivation to them, and each should try to take Matthews spot in the pass rush rotation. We never got to see what Biegel could do last season, and he essentially redshirted the season. Dom Capers couldn’t figure out how to use Gilbert who came on so strong down the stretch. Fackrell is probably the weak link, but he’s showed some flashes in the last season. I’d love nothing more than Matthews to be wrong.
