Cobb & Matthews Likely Out as Packers
Randall Cobb and Clay Matthews are the two biggest names that will be free agents when the NFL new year rolls around in mid-March. Michael Silver of the NFL Network who is dialed into the Green Bay team (Remember, he’s the same guy who pulled the anonymous sources after the Los Angeles game and has a relationship with Aaron Rodgers built on Cal and Cal alone.) He drops several interesting nuggets in this two-minute hit around free agency, but the thing that caught my eye was the comments related to Cobb and Matthews which comes at the end. It doesn’t sound like either will be back on the roster.
Earlier on @nflnetwork I talked about the @packers and their pressing decisions on Randall Cobb, Clay Matthews and others with @wyche89 @PatrickClaybon and a microphone that worked! pic.twitter.com/hWFgU3lJeh

It did feel like the writing was on the wall with Cobb. Remember, Rodgers and Cobb cried together before the Detroit game at the end of the year. Both players felt like it might be the end. There are a host of slot options like Golden Tate, Adam Humphries, Cole Beasley and others who might make more sense for the Packers than Cobb. It appears they’re going to go that way. The idea of the former second-round pick having gas in the tank is there given his age, but he didn’t stay healthy through his contract. With his second home being out in California, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Cobb play for San Francisco, Arizona or join Jordy Nelson in Oakland. All feel like logical spots for him.
Silver did not seem to rule out a Matthews return, but the market value needs to match up. Green Bay has a price in mind to sign him. They’re done this with other free agents in the past like Cullen Jenkins and James Jones. Sometimes, it works, and other times, a team overpays for their talent. Matthews has roots in Cleveland, and with the Browns needing an EDGE rusher, they might be a team that overpays for his services to have him join Green Bay East. There is enough EDGE talent in the draft and potentially in free agency that Matthews leaving is not going to kill Green Bay.
Free agency should be awesome.
Charlie.
