At the NFL Owners Meeting yesterday, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy talked about a host of things to a bunch of local reporters. One of the things he discussed was Damarious Randall. He mentioned the former first round pick played out of position with the Packers. That he belonged at safety, but the Packers needed him at cornerback. What does that say then when Green Bay got rid of Micah Hyde and Morgan Burnett which would have cleared a path for Randall to move to safety yet Green Bay didn’t want to do it. It’s clear Green Bay did not want Damarious Randall to return to the Packers this season.

This confirms everything we thought about the Randall trade. The deal was made to not only get a backup quarterback for Aaron Rodgers that Mike McCarthy and team can develop but to also get rid of a player who caused some issues in the locker room last season. We have no idea how strong Randall’s voice was at Lambeau, but it appeared Mike McCarthy had enough of it. Whether that’s a good reason to get rid of a player remains to be unseen. People seem to forget that Randall nearly missed the 53-man roster last September. McCarthy and him did not see eye-to-eye.

This closes the book on Randall’s tenure with the Packers in my opinion. He’s a bad draft pick by Ted Thompson as the team did not seek out a second contract after his rookie one, and they traded him before his deal ran out. This might be a blog post for the Fall, but people should not be critical of the Packers if Randall balls out this NFL season. People will rush to blame Brian Gutekunst without realizing that this team knew the player needed a change of scenery to grow up.
