Yesterday, Green Bay Packers announced that Davon House will be returning to the team on a one-year deal. After a tough 2017 season, the team decided to give him another go as they continue to fill out their defensive backfield. There’s going to be a blend of young and old players out there. House and Tramon Williams will be the leaders with Kevin King starting his second year, Josh Jones his third and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix his fourth. Still, this should not stop the Packers from drafting a cornerback that could be ready to start Day 1 for the team. They need to continue to build their depth. Green Bay asked House to do too much last season.

I’m not excusing the poor play of Davon last season, rather, providing the perspective that he probably couldn’t hack it with top receivers anymore. Number one receivers made a killing against House especially down the sidelines. We saw in the Monday Night game against Detroit where Marvin Jones had a massive game running House up and down the field. It’s really not his fault. If King was healthy, he may have assumed the role that House did last season. If the former Packers fifth round draft pick is your dime corner, that’s not a bad thing at all. The more veteran experience with the swath of younger players, the better. It’s clear House enjoys playing in Green Bay.

Another thing worth factoring in here is House may get put in a different position in the secondary with Mike Pettine’s system. Who knows. Maybe Pettine saw something on tape that makes him believe House can be a productive player in his system. A part of me has a sneaky feeling that could be the case for a lot of these guys who didn’t really play to their full potential under Dom Capers.
