The thing to do today compares the 2005 NFL Draft with the 2020 NFL Draft. 2005 NFL Draft is when Green Bay selected Aaron Rodgers to eventually replace Brett Favre. There are other comparisons with the 2005 NFL Draft and 2020 NFL Draft. Both Rodgers and Favre are the age of 35 when the Packers drafted the guy they thought you would take his place. But that’s where things end for the comparisons end for the two drafts. They shouldn’t be compared at all today, but they will because people fail to do any research.

In 2005, Favre already started to think about retirement. It wasn’t in the forefront of his mind, but the rumors were out there that Favre might be done sooner rather than later. Remember in 2005, quarterbacks did not stick around to their 40s and play quarterback. The other part of 2005 was the Packers were headed into a new era. They go 4-12 that year and fire Mike Sherman. None of us are expecting a 4-12 season from the Packers this season. Nor is this a new era.

The other part where this comparison falls flat is Rodgers was supposed to be a number one pick. People pegged Rodgers to go in the first five picks of the draft. No one expected him to be there at 23 when Packers selected him. Love did receive some high draft grades, but no one thought of him as a top 10 pick. Some scouts believe that if Love had the season he did in 2018, he is probably considered a top-15 selection.

The sole reason why this is shocking in 2020 is Green Bay made the NFC Championship Game. This isn’t a team that looks like they’ll be back drafting in the top 15 next season. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said there is never a time where they’re one player away. Did the Packers play over their skis last year and the plan all along was to get a quarterback to groom him for the future? Maybe, we were blind to it due to last year’s successful season. And for Rodgers, the Packers quarterback stated he would like to play into his 40s and wants to be in Green Bay for life. He also acknowledged that it’s a business and who knows what the final years hold for him. Rodgers has not thought about retiring once as Favre started to in 2005.

This will be the crutch for many people when talking about the Packers, but in reality, there are many differences.
