Don’t Judge Mike Pettine on Rex Ryan or Cleveland

Green Bay Packers hired Mike Pettine to be the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. People should be really excited for this hire. For those who don’t remember, Pettine worked as a defensive coordinator for the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills before taking the job with the Cleveland Browns. The narrative that some have developed is he only did a good job as a defensive coach due to Rex Ryan’s guidance, and we should actually take something away from his Cleveland experience.
People cannot fully be excited about anything in life anymore. We’re all expected to get ‘Milkshake duck’d from every situation in life including coaching hires. Pettine can be a good coach on his own. We don’t need to have takes out if Green Bay struggles early on, ‘Was it all due to Rex Ryan?’ You know who took Ryan and Pettine’s system and made it into their own thing? Jim Leonard, Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator, who played for both guys in both New York and Cleveland. It seemed like that worked out just fine, right? Packers made a really good hire, and we should all be celebrating. There is reason to be excited this morning.
Mike Pettine was DC of one of the greatest schemed defenses of all-time imo.

Look at the team that Pettine had in 2009 for the best defense in the league, it’s not a stellar roster. Yes, Darrelle Revis had an amazing season, but it’s more than just one player. He got so much out of middle of the road guys including Leonhard, and this should be the sign that he can do the same with Green Bay’s roster. I’m sure there are players that Pettine would like to see leave the team as well as those who could be brought in to make this roster better. This is a good move by Green Bay.
