Everything About Josh Hader Last Night was an Overreaction

Josh Hader stepped on the pitching mound for the first time since the All-Star Game. It’s the first time he stepped on the mound since his seven-year-old tweets were found and announced to the world. The takes around Hader this week have been all over the place. Hader stepped to the mound to a standing ovation. This led to an outcry against Milwaukee sports fans through the media. We all need to take a step back and be rational even if that’s not what we do in today’s society.

Did Hader deserve a standing ovation? Absolutely fucking not. That was an overreaction by the fans. They wanted to show support, and the way they did it was through a loud ovation. Fans saw Lorenzo Cain, Jesus Aguilar, Keon Broxton, Hernan Perez and others stand behind Hader when he talked to the media. Fans wanted to show their support, too. It wasn’t the right way to do it. Although, we cannot expect fans to be fully onboard and understand everything about social media or how damaging those tweets are to read for some people. Yet people still wanted to hone in on a narrative.
Now, the media paints Milwaukee fans as ‘racist, intolerable, drunk, dumb, privileged’ and any other superlative that you would like to pick out here. Brewers fans allowed them to paint this picture. Brewers fans are amazingly loyal and supportive. That’s all the standing ovation gesture was except it looks different in video and is different because of what Hader did. It’s a pure overreaction by anyone who is looking at this from a ground level and not trying to understand why it happened. Instead, it’s an absolute to people. There’s not gray area allowed in 2018.
Like I said earlier this week, cheering for Hader is your choice. If you don’t want to cheer for him, that’s fine. If you want to root him on like I did last night, that’s great, too. There’s no need for an ovation unless he does something great on the pitching mound.
