Grading The 2017 Packers – Running Back

The running back position became a strength for the Packers in 2017. That’s something I don’t know if anyone saw coming. They did draft three running backs, but no one knew if they were actually going to pan out. Just because you draft heavy at a position doesn’t mean those guys are going to be ready to go. But with Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones, the team has a solid backfield for the next few years.
Jamaal Williams: GRADE: B+
This was a pretty good rookie year for Jamaal Williams. It will get lost in the shuffle of rookie running backs as it’s a loaded position with Alvin Kamara and Christian McCaffrey. Williams had 556 yards of rushing and six total touchdowns. He had three straight games where he reached 100 plus yards through rushing and receiving. He gets downgraded for the drops in the passing game though. That needs to get better as the years go on. Also, he deserves high marks for his pass-blocking.
Aaron Jones: GRADE: B
Even though Jones suffered a torn MCL halfway through the season, he showed some real flashes in the time he played with the Packers. He rushed for 448 yards doing most of his damage against Dallas and New Orleans in the middle of the year. Before his injury, Jones had a real solid month going for the team. I’m not saying Williams and him can be New Orleans of the north, but they’re set up nicely to have the strongest running back combo in Aaron Rodgers’ history.
Ty Montgomery: GRADE:D
With all of the expectations that Ty Montgomery was going to become a lead back for the team, it never happened. Montgomery struggled with injuries all season, and he only played in eight games. Monty only averaged 3.8 yards per carry and his longest run of the year was only 37 yards. Green Bay will need to figure out what to do with him in his last year of his contract. I don’t see Green Bay letting him go as the cap hit wouldn’t be worth it.
