When people woke up on Sunday morning, articles were being published that the measure of success with this draft would be how T.J. Watt’s career pans out in Pittsburgh versus Kevin King and Vince Biegel’s. With Watt going one pick after Packers traded out of the 29 position, many made the assumption that Watt was their guy if they stayed at 29. That doesn’t appear to be the case. Mastero Bob McGinn of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says it came down to King or Florida State running back Dalvin Cook.

People, mostly Badgers fans, will try to say Watt could have been the answer especially if King or Biegel struggles with the team. There’s always going to be this fascination hard-on for Watt. That’s how it goes when you’re the first family of football in Southeastern Wisconsin. But the player we really should pay attention is Dalvin Cook. He ranked the highest on Murph’s big board on Thursday, and the dynamic back is with the rival Vikings to replace Adrian Peterson. Cook has a tall task with a terrible offensive line that Minnesota continues to ignore plus dealing with being Peterson’s replacement is quite much. Not to mention, Cook dealt with shoulder problems during his time with Seminoles.

Packers did address the running back need though later in the draft with Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones and Devante Mays. Green Bay clearly saw what happened when they did not have enough running backs. Williams is drawing the most excitement from people, but Jones and Mays could easily be contributors as well. All three have a unique style to them, but from everything I’ve read, they fit Packers mold of backs.

While it would have been major headlines if Packers drafted a running back early, it’s okay they waited to the fourth round. Same goes for if they would have drafted a Badger early on. Once again, they waited until the fourth round to make that move. If you look at this draft it shaped up agai in favor of Ted Thompson who did it is way without any fan interference.
