What Does Green Bay Do At Running Back?

Green Bay Packers have a problem they haven’t had in quite some time. In fact, it’s hard to recall when the last time Green Bay even came close to this being an issue. It appears that Aaron Jones might play on Sunday as well as Ty Montgomery seems ready to go as well. With the emergence of Jamaal Williams in the last couple games, Green Bay has three running backs who have all made their impact in some way, shape or form. The question becomes is how does Mike McCarthy handle the running back position on Sunday if he has all three backs?
The first hope is that the Packers get creative with the three guys. Play to each of their strengths and find opportunities for each of them. Tampa Bay is one of the worst defenses against the run, and Green Bay should have an opportunity to have a big day on the ground. Right now, Williams deserves to have the first shot. He looked so good last Sunday as the duel-threat running back who could catch out of the backfield along with delivering punishing runs. Green Bay finally has a running back who can actually take a screen and make something happen with it.
Jones and Montgomery deserve some time, but how much? Jones might be the short end of the stick this week, and McCarthy might put off his problem until Cleveland like a kid trying not to do homework. Jones is only three weeks removed from a sprained MCL. Even if he’s cleared to play, I wonder if Green Bay keeps him on ice to make sure he doesn’t hurt it again. The same could be said for Montgomery. He is dealing with the rib issue that’s plagued him for most of the year. Montgomery did show a nice balance to Williams against Chicago before leaving the game with an injury.
Green Bay can get creative with their running backs this week, and I hope Mike McCarthy tries a few things out of the ordinary with them.
