In Defense of Christian Yelich’s Day Off

Milwaukee Brewers fans are spoiled. It’s hard to believe that a franchise that hasn’t seen the playoffs since 2011 can be spoiled but here we are with this fanbase. Outrage reign across the state when Christian Yelich was not in the lineup yesterday against the Chicago Cubs. Many said you had to win this game to give yourself a shot at the National League Central crown. Brewers did not win, but Yelich did contribute with a base hit in the ninth. Athletes are people, too, and it’s time that sports fans respect that they need time off even in big situations.
The last time Yelich had a day off was July 2nd. Yes, that’s before the 4th of July and before the All-Star Break. He played in 387 innings out of the possible 391 since the All-Star Break. The dude gave his all for the team, and as the Brewers found themselves in a fight for a Wild Card spot with St. Louis, it was hard to keep Yelich out of the lineup with the way he hit the baseball last month. Yelich needed a break to get him ready for the final push of the season. Anyone who thinks that’s a bad thing or the wrong thing needs to examine themselves.
If Yelich broke down yesterday with a popped hamstring, what would everyone say? They would point to the innings and wonder “Why didn’t he get a day off?” This constant hand wringing about lineups make me miss Bucks Twitter which is a hard fucking thing to do. Counsell knows his team better than you. If Yelich and him talked about it, and they agreed that he needed a breather versus the Cubs, so be it. Yes, the game was a must-win, but the odds are stacked against Milwaukee to win the division even if they won last night.
Give me a well-rested fresh Yelich than a player who gets run down and struggles the rest of the season. I’m done worry about the lineup each day. But if we’re bitching about Dan Jennings’ usage, save me a seat.
Charlie.
