Is This the End of Urban Meyer?

News broke yesterday that Ohio State’s head football coach Urban Meyer knew about a domestic violence incident with former Ohio State wide receiver’s coach Zach Smith. Meyer denied knowing anything last week during Big Ten media days, but yesterday, Brett McMurphy had text messages from Smith’s ex-wife Courtney showing her in direct contact with Urban’s wife, Shelly. The Ohio State coach is on leave and might stay there. If it does cost him his job, the second and third chance nature of Meyer finally did him in.
Urban is the type of guy who gives second and third chances to virtually anyone who can play football. Look at all of the issues at Florida during his time. He kept Aaron Hernandez on the roster through three years of college. Meyer isn’t afraid to take a risk on a player, and that’s why it’s not surprising he held on to a wide receiver coach that no one really liked. Meyer has done this throughout his career with players. It’s not surprising he did it with a coach.
Also, we see how nepotism rears its ugly head. Smith only has this job because his grandfather is Earle Bruce. For those unfamiliar, Bruce is an Ohio State legend and Urban’s mentor through coaching. Therefore, he held onto Zach even though from all accounts, no one liked him and he had many demons including abusing alcohol. He’s a bad dude. Just like other bad dudes that Ohio State and Florida before them had on their roster. Finally, this way of handling things caught up to a National Champion head coach.
Will Meyer be let go by Ohio State? It’s hard to say at this point. Ohio State deserves a great deal of credit for being swift with putting him on leave and launching their investigation. If there is cause for firing where the Buckeyes wouldn’t have to pay Meyer his massive salary, I believe he’s no longer the head football coach of Ohio State.
Lot of questions still be answered in the coming days and weeks.
