Jimmy Butler in Philly Doesn’t Scare Me

During a college football Saturday, we had NBA news break with Jimmy Butler headed to Philadelphia from Minnesota for Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Jerryd Bayless and a second-round 2022 NBA Draft pick. This is a move that puts Philly into immediate attention for the Eastern Conference. Right now, Philadelphia is 8-5, third spot in the East, but the national media will be all over Philadelphia’s dick. They’re going to hype the living shit out of the Sixers looking at their top three players – Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Butler. The question is will this all come together? I’m not convinced. This Philly team still has some deep issues. Let’s count them.
Issue 1: Ben Simmons and the Sixers still can’t shoot – Other than JJ Redick, who is shooting threes for this team? Simmons is allergic to shooting a jump shot, let alone a three-pointer. Embiid is a decent three-point shooter, but honestly, it’s not a true part of his game. Butler is fine three-point shooter, but he’s nothing special. Sixers do not have a rotation of shooters. It’s a major issue for this team at this point. SUre, they could try to get a guy like Kyle Korver, but still, will Kover and Redick be enough?
Issue 2: Spacing is going to be a problem – Right now, one of the bigger things that’s plaguing Philadelphia is they have no spacing. They clog the middle because no one can shoot like we mentioned with issue 1. Also, Embiid is a massive human who sticks himself inside plugging the middle. Butler does not fix this problem. You could argue that he actually hurts things and adds to the problem.
Issue 3: Good luck with the team chemistry – Sure, they do not need to be best friends, but christ, this looks like a real problem. Embiid is the big dog in the room, and now, Butler expects to be that guy. How will that work? When will the Embiid subtweet happen about Butler? Will it be around December 15th or so? Karl-Anthony Towns might succumb to Butler’s shit, but Embiid certainly will not. Do you expect Simmons to show Jimmy respect either? Like these are three of the biggest egos in the gym on most nights.
Yes, everyone will get excited about this team, and Philadelphia could very well find themselves in the top three in the Eastern Conference. Yet at the end of the day, this isn’t a championship-defining move.
