Jordan Love Having Issues In Camp Is Natural & Not Surprising
A report came out the other day that Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is having some accuracy issues to start training camp. This made headlines, of course. Love is the first quarterback to be drafted in the first round by the Green Bay Packers since Aaron Rodgers. And unlike Rodgers, social media is in full throat now. It is a great thing that Rodgers didn’t have social media to worry about in 2007. That is a godsend, honestly. For Love, that is not the case so the microscope will always be large. But none of this is truly an issue for the Packers as it’s part of being a rookie.
When you’re a rookie, it is not going to immediately be easy. Some rookies pick things up early. And some positions are easier than others for rookies. But the quarterback position is fucking hard. Packers do not need Love to be great on Day 1. Hell, they do not need him to play in the first year of his career. They have a component backup in Tim Boyle, and Boyle will likely remain on the roster with Love as a third-string. Again, that will be a headline from Florio, ESPN, and others, but it is truly not a huge deal that Love is behind both Boyle and Rodgers.
One thing that hurts Love this season is the lack of preseason. While preseason was one of those not needed things for this year’s season with the pandemic, Love could have used it to develop. If Rodgers stays healthy, it is unlikely that Love will see the field unless of a blowout, and even then, Boyle might get the snaps, not Love. Preseason could have gotten him some on-the-field experience instead of watching it all from the sidelines this year.
Now if the Packers can already tell that Love isn’t going to be the guy long-term (Teams can usually tell early on. It’s fucking crazy and I cannot make sense of how this is possible). They will obviously keep it quiet and see if anything changes year-over-year. They would likely not need to move Love for two or three years at most. But there is no reason to have this discussion yet.
Love’s progression will be a story all year, but it is not critical for him to be the man immediately.
