Josh Jones Comes Back at Right Time

Green Bay Packers defense will be getting a boost on Sunday. Reports are Josh Jones will be back in action for his first game of the 2018 season. Jones battled an ankle injury that kept him out of the first two games of the season. Jones’ role on the team is a bit undefined at the moment, but with the injury to Jake Ryan and Oren Burks, Jones will handle the flats most likely. This is a vital thing for Week 3 against Washington. Jones’ task this week will not be an easy one. Holding down Chris Thompson, one of the best pass-catching running backs in football.
It’s a good thing that Jones is back in the mix for the Packers. They’ve been getting gashed by running backs for the first two weeks of the season. Jordan Howard had a big game out of the backfield being the safety valve for Mitch Trubisky. Then Dalvin Cook did some things in that same role but not to the level of Howard. With Thompson, he might be the first or second option when quarterback Alex Smith goes back to pass. Through two games, Thompson has 19 catches. The next closest receiver to him is Jordan Reed with 10. He’s a monster out of the backfield.
This will be a big test for Jones as Thompson may be one of the hardest opponents he’ll play all season. That said, it’s a good barometer to see where he’s at in this role. If Jones cannot handle Thompson, it’s not worth a panic, but it’s definitely something to monitor as the season goes on especially against pass-catching running backs.
