Kliff Kingsbury is one of the hottest names in football for a head coach or offensive coordinator. Why? The evolution of the spread offense in football. It’s grown to rapid proportions. Kingsbury worked with Patrick Mahomes, the best young quarterback in the NFL, and he also spent time with Baker Mayfield as well. With the Green Bay Packers coaching search open, some hoped Kingsbury might get a shot at being the Packers head coach or at least join the staff as a coordinator. That did not happen as he decided to join USC and be their offensive coordinator. This isn’t a bad move for Kliff but a bummer for the Packers.

Kingsbury going to USC is a wise move. Their coach is on the hot seat, therefore, he might only be there for a year before a new coach comes in. A new coach might keep him especially if he’s been modeling J.T. Daniels into a Heisman candidate by his junior year. Also, the NFL will always be there for him. USC is a prominent job where people have reached NFL coordinator jobs and even a head coaching job (Shouts to Lane Kiffin!). This is a smart next step, even if it means not joining the Packers.

This is pure speculation, but a lot of people tied Kingsbury to Josh McDaniels. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports said people were waiting on McDaniels to make a move to Green Bay then they would join him. People thought this was about Handsome Kliff. The former Texas Tech coach got drafted by New England, worked for New England and likely still keeps in contact with them. I wonder if Kliff sought out the advice of McDaniels about ‘What should I do?’ The other part of the NFL is he would have to wait another month at the very least to get a job. Maybe, he’s the type of person that always wants to work and being unemployed for that long is a tiresome process. There are many reasons why the NFL didn’t happen for the Red Raider alum.
