Lane Taylor Returns to Packers Giving Additional O-Line Depth

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Lane Taylor still did not know where he might be playing next year. Taylor was one of the few guys from last year’s Packers team that went unsigned through most of the offseason. Packers and Taylor agreed to a pay cut and Taylor will be staying with Green Bay. He signed a one-year deal. This gives the Packers an excellent amount of depth on the offensive line. Packers are looking very solid upfront to start the 2020 season which has to make you feel good as a Packers fan.
Green Bay is now loaded with interior lineman. Taylor adds to that group as a guard first, tackle second. The team added three offensive linemen in this year’s draft which immediately adds depth. But it does not add the experience. The former starter gives them that experience. He did start at left guard to begin the year then suffering a season-ending injury early in September paved the way for Elgton Jenkins who was a Rookie of the Year candidate that no one knew about. The starting job is not coming back to Taylor, but he is a serviceable backup for the team.
Another thing to mention about Taylor is he does play a little tackle. It didn’t go well when he did it a few years ago, but he knows how to do it. Billy Turner, Packers right guard, is likely the backup, but even then, Taylor could serve at the right guard position if they need to fill tackle for an injury. Regardless, he is a versatile option at a cheap price. Good for Green Bay to get this deal done with him.
Briant Gutekunst has one question remaining, will they sign Tramon Williams? It seems like Mike Pettine wants him back badly, but the team hasn’t given any indication. We’ll see if that’s Green Bay’s next move.
