Losing Blake Griffin is a Major Blow to Detroit’s Chances
Blake Griffin could have easily acted like he didn’t want to play in Detroit. Everyone bemoaned the fact he went from sunny Los Angeles to Detroit. But Griffin did not. Instead, he embraced being a member of the Pistons and had a huge year for the team. The former first overall pick might earn himself a third-team all-NBA spot with the way he played this season. Sadly for Griffin, the road ends here. Vince Goodwill of Yahoo! Sports reported Monday that Griffin would miss the playoffs and that hurts Detroit’s chances significantly versus Milwaukee.
Apparently, the swelling on his knee cannot stay down. Griffin wants to play, but no one thinks he will actually get clearance to do so. It is not surprising that Blake wants to get out there after the embarassment that the Pistons had without him on Sunday night. I’m sure it hurt to watch the team get dominated from the start on the sidelines. Even if Griffin cannot do all the things we’re used to seeing from him, it gives his teammates a confidence boost being on the floor. We’ll see if it actually happens tonight. Detroit would be taking a major risk, and does it really feel worth it? They can easily be back here next year with a better squad.
If the former Clippers star cannot go, I’m unsure what Detroit does against Milwaukee. They have to deal with having zero players that can guard Giannis Antetokounmpo. Thon Maker cannot keep up. Andre Drummond is too slow. Jon Leuer… Yeah right, we saw what happened there earlier this season. Pistons are at a true disadvantage, and their playoff losing streak could continue on throughout these playoffs. Right now, Detroit holds the NBA lead with consecutive playoff losses. They sit at 10 games. It is a dubious record that might be worse before it gets better.
We’ll see what the good word is about Blake later this afternoon.
