Luke Getsy’s Return is Good For Rodgers & Packers
It’s not every day that a coach who is an offensive coordinator at a Power 5 would come back to the NFL to be a position coach. Luke Getsy is making that move. The former Packers wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator will be returning to coach Green Bay, but this time, it will be as a quarterbacks coach. He leaves his job at Mississippi State where he was the offensive coordinator yet not a playcaller since that belong to head coach Joe Moorhead. Getsy’s return to the Packers organization is a good thing for the team especially Aaron Rodgers.
While as a receivers coach for the Packers, Getsy help mold Davante Adams into the All-Pro receiver he is today. He did a lot differently to train the receivers on catching the football among other things. Getsy will likely still work with receivers, but it will be in conjunction with Rodgers and the other quarterbacks. If you look around, Rodgers says nothing but glowing things about Getsy. It seems like the two had a connection, even though, Rodgers is a year older than him. This should be another motivating factor for Rodgers, and hopefully, the two can work on what went wrong in 2018 and how to fix it.
The other thing Getsy brings to the table is insight on the McCarthy era Packers. I don’t think Matt LaFleur exactly needs that, but if the team reacts negatively to something, he can lean on Getsy to see what they did differently years ago. Another value add that the new coach brings is the ability to break down the tape of what worked and what didn’t in the McCarthy offense when Rodgers played a high level. This is a good way for the coaches to know what to keep in the playbook for next season, and the things to get rid for next year.
LaFleur has continued to build a young staff around him. This will be unlike anything we’ve seen in Green Bay in some time, but I love the Packers trying something different for once in my lifetime.
