Marcedes Lewis is Exactly What the Packers Need
Green Bay Packers made a move right before the three-day weekend. Packers signed veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis to a likely a one or two year deal. The terms of the contract are not yet live. Green Bay has yet to announce the signing. Lewis took to Instagram with a cheese emoji and him signing documents. It’s safe to say it will be announced later today. This is a great move by Brian Gutekunst and team. The exact type of move that Ted Thompson would not make as general manager to help deepen the roster.
What Green Bay gets from Lewis is a blocking tight end. Last year, he was the best blocking tight end in the National Football League. He played a large part in sealing the edge for Leonard Fournette. That’s huge for Green Bay. With Jimmy Graham’s lack of blocking, Lewis will provide an option for the team when running the ball. This will benefit Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams in a major way. He can catch the ball a little bit in the red zone too as Blake Bortles found him from time to time. The other thing to like about Lewis is he was a captain last year on a young Jacksonville team. Adding a guy with leadership skills never hurt your roster.
Green Bay should be able to do some fun things with Lewis at tight end. We talked about this sort of thing last year when Green Bay signed Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks and it never happened. Here’s hoping that things will be different in 2018.
