Mark Murphy Puts Out A Super Bowl Declaration

On Monday, Green Bay Packers chairman Mark Murphy spoke to Packers’ shareholders at the annual meeting. Usually, there are a few things that are notable from Packers brass, but it’s hard to remember hearing as brazen of a quote than what we heard from Murphy. He told the shareholders that Packers would be finding themselves at Super Bowl 52 in the next state over in Minneapolis. It’s an admirable quote, and let’s not overreact about it.
A part of me respects and loves the chairman’s confidence in this team. I know this is being said to a group of fans, but that’s a bold comment. He knows headlines will be written, and it becomes the story of the Shareholder’s meeting. I’ve sensed for a long time that Green Bay wants to play that Super Bowl in their rival’s stadium. Nothing would be sweeter for them including those in the front office.
Here’s why Murphy’s comment doesn’t really matter that much, shareholders meeting is a gathering of Packers fans for the new season. These are all fans. Murphy is basically like any politician and playing to his base. Sure, the Super Bowl guarantee will get headlines in a culture that’s thirsts for every little thing the NFL throws at him. But in the end, it’s not really a major deal to have him say this to many Packers fans who see themselves as better than others for owning a piece of paper.
Packers hype machine started with full steam on Monday, and it’s not going to stop any time soon with this team’s sky high expectations.
