Matt LaFleur is Right Coach for Packers Job
Green Bay Packers coaching search is over. Green Bay interviewed 12 people in a mere week. On Monday night, they came to a decision. Matt LaFleur, the Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator, will be the next head coach of the Packers. The 39-year-old must have blown it away in the interview process because they didn’t have a second interview, rather, they chose him as the head coach. LaFleur will oversee the Packers’ chance at rebuilding their team and bringing them into the future of football. He has an amazing skill set that’s perfect for the Packers and Aaron Rodgers. This is the start of what should be a great relationship even if some believe this is a poor choice.
In December, LaFleur was the top choice of SnoTapWI to replace Mike McCarthy. The reasons why featured the fact he worked with both Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, two of the brightest minds in the National Football League. He also had an ability to get the most of quarterbacks and talent. He coached up Kirk Cousins to one of his best seasons in Washington. Matt Ryan won the MVP and made the Super Bowl the year LaFleur coached Atlanta. The new Packers coach also played a part in making Jared Goff a legitimate quarterback. He’s a super smart coach who is creative and will be creative with this Packers offense. The skill players have a chance to shine with him.
Some people will wonder why didn’t their guy get signed on to be the Packers coach. Most notably, the Josh McDaniels contingent will be upset. Here’s the thing. All of these guys interviewed, and the brain trust of the Packers deemed LaFleur the right guy for the job. Packers’ front office likely asked questions around how to do you fix Rodgers, and what would be the first thing to jump start the offense? My assumption is LaFleur knocked it out of the park, and that’s when Green Bay made their decision on a coach.
There will be worries that the Packers are chasing trends with a McVay/Shanahan coach, but my belief is this is the new NFL. The creativity should be with your offense and trying something new is worth the risk with Rodgers. If this is where the league is going, it’s better to be in the mix with ideas on how to play with it versus being behind it.
Go Pack Go and welcome Matt.
Charlie.
