Mike McCarthy Gets WIAA Complaint For Yelling at Refs
Mike McCarthy is no longer the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. That doesn’t mean he left Wisconsin. In fact, his stepson plays for Pulaski High School where he apparently decided to go after high school officials for their calls in a game. Now, this is hilarious to me. McCarthy knows this will be a story in the Green Bay area, and he did not give one fuck in the world. I absolutely love that about him. Let’s dive into the story more and find out why Mac got so fired up.
“This parent chose to follow the officials and berate them, which is clearly unacceptable,” said Janel Batten, Pulaski’s athletic director.
Through an open records request FOX 11 submitted to the Pulaski School District, we were provided security footage from moments after the game concluded. There is no audio, but you can see a Pulaski staff member escorting the referees out of the gym with a man following behind. District officials confirmed the man is McCarthy.
Here’s the thing, I appreciate Mac being passionate but going after refs is a tough look as a parent. It’s different as a kid. I had so many run-ins with refs that probably would have landed me in hot water in Year 2019. Two examples – One featured the worst officiated soccer game of my life where we all stood down the ref as she walked out of the soccer pitch. In retrospect, a dick move but one that only happened because the reffing was so terrible. In a cruel twist of fate, her son would end up dating a girl from our high school. Awkward. The other one was when I yelled out my senior year to a ref ‘He’s riding him like a pornstar, ref!’ right behind the coaches bench. One of the coaches (Shouts to Raue) asked me to rephrase that one. There are other examples too. But we were all kids.
If my dad or stepdad did that at a game, I would be appalled. You never want to have the parent that takes it too far with the officials. When that person happens to be a public figure in Green Bay, it becomes even worse. Part of me thinks this will not dissuade teams from giving him a call next offseason, but the NFL reporters always find something stupid to nitpick a coach over.
