Milwaukee & Philadelphia: A Rivalry in the Making
Philadelphia Phillies signed Bryce Harper yesterday to a 13-year, 330 million dollar deal with no opt-outs. Harper wants to be a Phillie for life, and he has no plans of leaving the City of Brotherly Love. Phillies have officially won the offseason for Major League Baseball. They acquired three All-Stars from last season along with a few others. On paper, they’re going to be one of the favorites to win the National League. But people will forget about Milwaukee and their team. Hmm, this sounds familiar… Oh right, this is basketball too. All of the sudden, the Philadelphia and Milwaukee rivalry is a real, spectacular thing.
Both cities are having a glow up as the kids would say. Milwaukee has Giannis Antetokounmpo, the potential NBA MVP, and the Brewers have the NL MVP, Christian Yelich. Brewers made it to one game away from the World Series. There is an expectation that the Bucks may find their way to the NBA Finals this season. As for Philadelphia, they have Joel Embiid and a host of others on their basketball team, and their baseball team added arguably the biggest name in the sport. There is already a good rivalry brewing with the Sixers-Bucks that just needs a playoff series to push it over the top. Baseball will take awhile. Outside of the division, the only real rival for Milwaukee is Los Angeles.
I’ll very much enjoy the hype the Phillies will get to start the season. People are going to be all over them despite not being in the playoffs last season, and they play in a very tough division. With Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and St. Louis all being factors in the National League, Milwaukee will get forgotten about which is okay.
Brewers-Phillies meet for the first time this season in late May at Miller Park. If somehow, Bucks-Sixers are in the Eastern Conference Finals, the timing will matchup, and it’s all out war between the two cities.
