Missing Monroe Means More Needed From Bucks Bench

Milwaukee Bucks had no problems disposing of the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday afternoon with a 117-106 victory that was much more of a blowout than the the final would show you. News came out before the game that Greg Monroe would be missing this game with a calf injury then after the game, head coach Jason Kidd said Monroe will be sidelined for two weeks. That’s a major loss for this Bucks bench, and they’re going to need to find some scoring options plus some more paint minutes for the other Bucks big men.
John Henson is off to a quick start for Milwaukee this season, and if that continues, Milwaukee may not have anything to worry about with Monroe being gone. Henson had a great game on Sunday afternoon with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists in 28 minutes of play. That’s a hell of a stat line for the former first round pick out of North Carolina. He did have six fouls, and that’s where the issues could come into place against better big men. Henson is a veteran who still makes rookie fouls out there.
Thon Maker is the other big man that might get a few more minutes, but it appears he’s on a minute restriction to start the season. No one really knows why, but Maker has not played more than 20 minutes in a game this season. In fact, the 20 minutes happened on Sunday. Who knows if Kidd will try and get more out of Maker. The problem is both Henson and him have a tendency to run themselves into foul trouble.
There are some fan rumblings about potentially sticking Giannis Antetokounmpo at center for defensive purposes. Bucks would deploy a small lineup with Giannis in the middle. We haven’t seen the ‘Point center’ in the NBA, but it’s coming quicker than you know. Don’t be surprised if you see this one in the coming weeks.
As noted, the team did not miss a beat with Monroe not playing on Sunday. They looked fresh and avoided any sort of letdown against a bad Hawks team. Giannis had 33 with Khris Middleton having his best game of the year with 27 points plus a full stat line. Bucks have another challenging game on Tuesday when Oklahoma City rolls into town.
