MubbCap: Golden Eagles Get Hot at Right Time
In one of the newer Drake songs out, he starts out the song saying ‘I just flipped a switch.’ And part of me thinks they should play that when Marquette starts going on a run. Sitting at the Marquette game last night, I never felt worried about Marquette against Butler. It’s a weird feeling to have when your team is trailing by eight or nine points in the second half, yet, there isn’t a worried ounce on my body. Marquette showed again why they’re one of the best teams in the nation disposing of Butler, 79-69, and earning their first season sweep of the Bulldogs since Butler joined the Big East.
Player of the Game: Theo John – What a night for Theo John in the paint. He finished the game with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks (Felt like more). John dominated the big men of Butler in the paint. He has become a player that can go work on the block. Whether he takes it straight to the bucket or works a hook shot, those are both strong plays in Theo’s arsenal. John has become such an important player to Marquette’s season.
Silver Star: Markus Howard – Here’s the thing about Markus Howard’s outing last night, I didn’t exactly think he played all that well in the middle of the game. Say 15 minutes of the first half to the 15 minutes of the second half. But he came on so strong to finish up the game. He went 9-for-20 from the field making six three-pointers for 28 points. Howard added six rebounds. One of the biggest plays of the game featured Howard getting fouled on a made three that pushed the lead out further for Marquette.
Thing I liked: It’s a different guy every night – I’ve written about this before but worth noting how well Marquette plays when there is a rotation of secondary guys stepping up for the team. I can point a game where Joey Hauser played a large role. Sacar Anim. Sam Hauser obviously. And last night, it was John. The depth of this team is remarkable, and the ability to have a different guy find their rhythm with Howard makes them a force.
Thing I didn’t like: Joey Hauser’s foul trouble – Last two games have been rough ones on Joey from a fouling perspective. He amassed nine fouls in his last 10 games and seen his minutes dwindle because of it. Hauser needs to be a little more in control when it comes to defense. There are too many times in a game where he wildly fouls someone.
Next up: Marquette needs to rub their eyes and wake up to play Providence at 11:00 am on Saturday. This game is a bit scary as Providence is a tough defensive team who can only seem to beat St. John’s, a team that Marquette struggled with this year. Providence-Marquette had a rock fight to start the game in Milwaukee before Marquette turned it on late.
Charlie.
